A practical guide to tax-free shopping for international clients.

The process becomes simple when eligibility, documents and departure procedures are considered before the purchase.

Tax-free shopping can allow travellers resident or domiciled outside the European Union to obtain VAT relief or a later refund on eligible goods purchased in Italy. The principle is straightforward, but the result depends on correct documentation and customs validation.

Confirm eligibility before shopping.

Residence outside the European Union is the central requirement. The goods must be for personal or family use and leave the EU within the period required by the rules. Thresholds and individual retailer procedures can change, so eligibility should be confirmed at the point of purchase.

Carry the right original document.

The boutique normally needs passport information or another accepted document proving non-EU residence. The name used for the tax-free invoice should match the traveller who will present the goods and documentation when leaving the European Union.

Ask for the electronic tax-free invoice.

Italy uses the OTELLO electronic system for tax-free invoices and customs validation. The retailer prepares the transaction and explains whether relief is applied directly or whether the refund will be processed later through an authorised operator.

Plan the final EU departure.

Customs validation takes place when the goods leave the European Union, which may not be the same country where they were purchased. Travellers should allow time, keep the goods available for inspection and avoid packing essential documents inside checked luggage.

Understand the refund conditions.

The amount received may differ from the full VAT shown because refund operators can apply service charges. Method and timing vary. Receipts, electronic references and customs confirmation should be kept until the process is complete.

The Luxa perspective

Tax-free is an administrative procedure, not an automatic discount. A few minutes of preparation before purchase can prevent uncertainty at departure.
